By far the most intimidating of all the rooms for a few reasons. First, it’s the largest and used for ceremonial events, portrait unavailing, and metal of honor awards. The Family Theater was created by Franklin D. Roosevelt for viewing wartime newsreels. It’s recommended to line up about 15 minutes before your starting time. Talking with people in line, they did not hold you to that time.

Take it under the presidential seal located above the entrance of the Blue Room. They call it a lobby, but it was a hallway into the White House. They have historical shots of the presidents through the years. I was able to reach out to the intern and get my tours rearranged. I can’t say requesting the tours on two separate days would have improved or hurt my chances, but remember this could be a possibility. I requested a tour of both the White House and the US Capitol, giving a window of two days.
The National Park Service does not schedule White House tours or provide tickets to enter the White House.
This week, Congress also passed legislation that would force ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, to sell its stake in the app within nine to 12 months or leave the United States altogether. The president signed it on Wednesday, though the measure is likely to be challenged in court. But hanging over those pleasantries during his visit to China this week are several steps the U.S. is taking to sever economic ties in areas where the Biden administration says they threaten American interests. And those will be the focus of greater attention from Chinese officials, as well.

You will enter the White House by the south side of East Executive Avenue near the Southeast Gate, where National Park Service rangers will be on hand to assist you. If you are successful in your application to book a tour of the White House, there are further instructions and guidelines to consider on the day. Union Station is around 1.5 miles away from the Visitor Center. Heading northeast along Massachusetts Avenue, you can take in the city as you walk there, or hop on the shuttle bus that leaves from outside the station every 10 minutes. During the early 20th century, various additions were made to the building, including the iconic West Wing that houses the Oval Office, the Cabinet Room, the Situation Room, and the Roosevelt Room, among others. During the Great Depression, the White House suffered neglect as a result of dwindling funding, and urgent renovations were needed during the 1940s.
In the hallway, you’ll notice a lot of portraits including John F. Kennedy and Ronald Regan. During Theodore Roosevelt’s time, in 1902 the room was enlarged. Before Jacqueline Kennedy’s restoration project, presidents were responsible for furnishing the house themselves. Thankfully some of these pieces were donated back to the White House. The Blue Room is directly across from the front entrance of the White House. It has an Oval Shape, and is used as the official White House Christmas tree in it every year.

Spothero and Parking Panda are your best option when looking for the cheapest parking in D.C. If you take a rideshare service, like Uber or Lyft, set the destination point to the White House Visitor Center. If you aren’t traveling with a group, feel free to ask a fellow tour member to take your picture.
White House tours must be requested through one’s Member of Congress and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s recommended to make your request as early as possible, up to three months in advance. If you need to rent a bike, you can grab a Capital Bikeshare bike to get from your hotel to the White House tour entrance. Drop the bikeshare off at one of the nearby racks so you don’t continue to be charged for use and then walk over to the White House. On-street parking can be VERY hard to find, so plan on using an app like SpotHero to find a space in a garage within your budget (read our full guide to parking in DC).

You can take images through the fence on the north side of the street, or cross over to include people and bustling street scenes to add a sense of perspective. On the south side of the White House, there are lots of trees that line the South lawn, which can be prohibitive to your view. There are, however, 2 walkways on E Street that offer you some excellent photographic opportunities.
You can count on spending at least 45 minutes to an hour touring the White House. There is a one-way route, so you can’t get lost (they won’t let you). If everyone is hungry after the tour, check out a few of our favorite restaurants near the White House. The list of what is actually allowed inside of the White House with you on your tour is VERY short, especially for parents with kids. The White House Historical Association also has a small shop on the tour route where you can pick up souvenirs.
Elegant interiors paired with first-class service and facilities make this 5-star hotel one of the most sought after in the city. Stringent security measures are in place for when members of the public visit the White House. Visitors should be prepared for thorough security screenings on the day of your tour, and information about prohibited items and guidelines can be found on the official tour page. U.S. citizens must request White House tours through their state representative’s office (House of Representatives or Senators). Tickets are in high demand in the spring, summer and over the Christmas holidays, so request your tickets as soon as possible. Your visit to The White House and President's Park will be a truly unique national park experience.
This mid-range hotel offers comfortable and affordable accommodation just 2 blocks from the White House and right next to Farragut West Metro station, therefore affording easy access to the entire city. Designed very much with business travelers in mind, this hotel offers collaborative workspaces with super-fast Wi-Fi, wireless printing, and Mac and PC workstations. Bedrooms are plush and well-appointed with tall windows and luxury linens, while the communal areas feel decadent.
Was not able to accommodate White House complex tour requests. Generally, the White House Christmas theme is revealed around Thanksgiving, but you should request your tickets before then. You can request tour dates throughout the month of December.
No one knows what exactly occurred between Pierce and the Fox sisters. But the White House session may have mirrored the Fox sisters’ other séances, which commenced with guests sitting in a circle, holding one another’s hands, and reciting a prayer. Then, the rappings would begin, and the sisters would allegedly lift the veil on the spirit world. On January 6, 1853, newly elected president Franklin Pierce and his wife Jane experienced every parent’s worst nightmare. Their only surviving child, 11-year-old Bennie, died in a horrific train accident in Massachusetts. Monday will mark Harris's third trip to Georgia in 2024 and her 12th since being sworn in.
Catch up on White House history with the free podcast The 1600 Sessions and enhance your trip with the White House Experience app from the White House Historical Association.
